Happy Father's Day!

A Prayer for fathers, grandfather's and fathers-soon-to-be (including the adopted ones!) -

A Special Prayer for Father
God, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. Help them to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way.
Amen

A few Googled poem's to honor dads everywhere on Father's Day!

What Makes a Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Fathers young, fathers old
Remembering good times are our gold.

Value earned through guidance given
Helping us go forth in living'.

Each father adding to our trove
A treasure chest of love untold.

Remembering father in our lives
Taking time to realize.

Fatherly love brings wealth to living
Remembering this we go forth in giving.

Fathers young, fathers old
We remember you all
As life unfolds.

Summer Special Music & Flowers Needed at Lake City Pres

It is the beginning of June and time to start thinking about summer ministry offerings and opportunities at Lake City Pres!

Summer Special Music
Are you interested in sharing your musical talents for summer worship? Do you have musical friends or relatives who might be visiting this summer? How about musical firends or relatives who live close by who may be interested in sharing their music with us?

Our choir typically does not sing during the summer months, so we are looking for others who might provide special music for our worship services from June 28th through September 13th.

If you are interested or know of someone else who might be please contact Lake City Pres Director of Music - Kathy Barnett

Flowers for Worship
There are a quite a few empty slots for sanctuary flowers on the sign-up sheet. There are so many flowers growing in our gardens that it is a great time to consider sharing flowers for worship. Contact the Lake City Pres office to sign up or to get more information.

Happy June!

"The Great Emergence" Bookstudy

Our interim pastor - Barb Schacht - is starting a seven week book study this week - are you signed up? There are three times that she'll be leading the study: Wednesday at 2 pm and 7 pm, Sundays at 11:30 am following worship.  There will be copies of the first chapter available if you don't have a copy of the book by June 3rd or 6th.

** If anyone is interested in holding an online discussion of the book contact Leena Prindle (Director of Faith Formation & author of this blog post). **

Here is the invite from Pastor Barb:

"The most interesting book I have read in a year is The Great Emergence by Phyllis Tickle. She says that about every five hundred years the Christian Church has a rummage sale and throw out cherished but no longer usable ideas and practices. The last rummage sale was the Reformation, and we're going through another one right now.

Please join me in reading and sharing reactions to the author's explanation of our history and predictions about our future. We'll meet for seven weeks to cover seven short chapters starting June 3rd (Wednesday) or June 7 (Sunday). Books cost $15.00 each if purchased through the church office. "

Contact the office or Pastor Barb to sign up (or Leena to share in a weekly online discussion).

Happy Mothers Day! - Nooma video

Happy Mother's Day.

Here is a great video from NOOMA & Rob Bell in honor of mothers and the women God created them to be for all of us. This clip especially explores the maternal characteristics of God and how the persona of God is expressed through a woman.

May God pour his spirit of love and blessings over all mothers on Mother's Day and every day.

National Day of Prayer - May 7th, 2009

National Day of Prayer is this Thursday - May 7th, 2009.

Lake City Pres is holding two prayer times this week:
* Healing Service of Prayer on Wednesday May 6th, 7-8pm
* National Day of Prayer Drop In Prayer time: Thursday May 7th, The Sanctuary/Worship space is open for drop-in prayer from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Contact Katrina Obata via the church office for more information.

Annie's Home Page has a lot of great information about various holidays throughout the year, even one on the National Day of Prayer. http://www.annieshomepage.com/ndop.html
Below are thoughts referenced from her homepage.

" National Day of Prayer in the United States is Celebrated Thursday May 7th, 2009 Always on the first Thursday of May each year!

2009 is the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer

What is the theme for 2009? NDOP Home says that the 2009's event theme is: "Prayer... America's Hope" and is based on the verse from Psalm 33:22 which states: "Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee."

The National Day of Prayer site explains it this way: "The National Day of Prayer (NDP) is an annual event established by an act of Congress which encourages Americans to pray for our nation, its people and its leaders. The NDP Task Force concentrates on the need to pray for those in leadership on all levels of national, church, and educational areas of influence."

The Nationally Broadcast Concert of Prayer
Another major event sponsored by the National Prayer Committee and held on the evening of the National Day of Prayer is the Nationally Televised Concert of Prayer.

Here is what The World Book Encyclopedia says about PRAYER:
"Prayer refers to reverent words and thoughts directed toward God, gods, goddesses, or other objects of worship.  People pray to ask for spiritual benefits for themselves or others.  They also offer praise, thanksgiving, or adoration to the object of worship.  Prayers may take the form of speech, song, dance, or silent reverence.  Some people kneel while praying. Others stand, sit, or lie on the ground.

Prayer is an important form of worship in nearly all the religions in the world. Most religions have regular prayers for both community and private worship. Individuals may also offer private prayers that express personal thoughts. Contemplation is prayer in which a person concentrates only on the object of worship."

Some Ideas for worship as individuals and as a family:
  • Start a Family Prayer Journal. Make sure you date your prayer requests
then have a column for "answered prayer" to see how and when the Lord
    answered your prayer.
  • Make sure you check your local newspaper or Church bulletin to see where
your local community will be holding services for The National Day of
    Prayer 2009.
  • Make a Prayer Basket for yourself. Here are a few suggestions: Your
    Bible; Notepad and pen/pencil; box of tissue; your Prayer Journal;
index cards; You might consider giving one to others as a gift.
  • Write some or all of your prayer requests on a note card and carry it
with you. Then when you have to wait in line or for an appointment just
pull it out to remind you what you can pray for. That way your time
won't be wasted and you will feel like you are doing something
worthwhile too. You can post individual prayer requests on index
cards and then put them in strategic places to remind you to pray.
On the mirror in your bathroom, on the fridge or on a chair for example.
  • Write out Bible Verses about Prayer and memorize them.
  • Memorize the Lord's Prayer.
  • Use the waiting time to pray for the person right in front of you. Pray
for the cashier while you are waiting in a long line or the people
in front of you or behind you.
  • Stuck in traffic or at a red light? Pray for the people in the car
    in front of you.
  • Is your doctor running late AGAIN? Pray for him/her and the nurses.
Pray for the patient they are taking care of while you wait.
  • I am sure you can come up with a few ideas of your own.
Remember you are only limited by your own imagination
Thanks Annie! check out her National Day of Prayer Page for even more great information on the day and on Prayer in general.
