This Sunday, February 24th, LCPC Missions Department invites you to experience mission opportunities of a few members who have traveled in the past year. This Lunch & Presentation will be in the Fellowship Hall immediately following our 10 a.m. worship service - approx. 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Mary & Stan Jeppesen and Ann Powell will share stories, travels, pictures and some of what God is doing in these far-away places.

• The Jeppesens will be sharing their opportunity to work with Guatemala Village Health in Guatemala - Central America.
• Ann Powell will be talking about her trip to Africa also involving health care ministry.
• Lunch will be served and presentations will occur during the lunch.

Christmas Eve Worship Times & Christmas resources for Families

If you're looking to get a Bible for a child/teenager in your life here are a few quality options: 

For the preschool and elementary age children:

* Check out the beautifully illustrated paraphrased Jesus Storybook Bible. It is currently 50% off on Amazon.com that can ship to you by Christmas! 

* If you want a general bible I really like:The NRSV Children's Bible by Abingdon Press and the NIV Adventure Bible. Some illustrations, study helps, maps, and faith-life application questions for kids to ponder.

For teens and young adults my favorite solid standbys are:

* New International Version Student Bible (Revised)  or the New Revised Standard Version edited by Phillip Yancey. Both Bibles have study guide, lots of great historic information, glossary, maps, and devotional pieces for applying scripture to life as a young adult.

* If you're looking for a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible for teens/young adults - I'd recommend the The Message Remix by Eugene Peterson. When looking at the various options for this Bible, be aware there are some versions of the Message that have only The Psalms, Proverbs, and New Testament.

Galactic Blast! ~ August 16-20, 2010
Morning VBS ~ 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  ~ Age 3 years to entering Grade 5 (Fall 2010)

Afternoon Program ~ 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ~ Grade 1 through Grade 5, including youth helpers in grades 6-12.

Cost per child for the week: $20 for morning program, $40 for morning and afternoon.
$100 maximum cost per family and scholarships are available per request.

Lent Wednesdays & Holy Week Happenings

We still have Lent Wednesday Soup Supper & Bible Study going on tonight and next Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All Ages welcome! 

* The Adult Bible Study class is focusing on Jesus' ministry and miracles in the Gospel books and people are really enjoying digging into the scripture. Each class topic stands on it its own - so if this is your first time attending - it's alright, you won't have to catch up!

* There are also classes for the middle/high school age crowd, elementary school age children, and nursery care is provided for infants/toddlers/preschool children.

Up and coming in two weeks is Holy Week signifying Jesus' journey to the cross and eventually his resurrection at Easter. Here are a few dates to pencil or type into your calendar:

* Palm Leaf Cross Folding Party - Saturday March 27th, 9:30 a.m. - Have you ever folded a palm leaf into a cross? It's a really neat trick to share with others once you've figured it out. Come join in on a Palm Cross folding party in preparation for Palm Sunday worship. The crosses will be handed out to all in attendance on Sunday morning. Children & youth welcome to participate!! * Palm Sunday Worship - Sunday March 28th, 10:00 a.m. - Have you heard the word 'Hosanna' and wondered what that's all about? Join in worship as we acknowledge Jesus as the one who saves us from our sin and gives us a life of freedom. There will be waving of palm branches just as when the people ushered Jesus into Jerusalem as their Messiah-to-be.

* Maundy Thursday Worship - Thursday April 1st, 7:00 p.m. - Remembrance of Jesus' Last Supper with the disciples at Passover (Communion) and his commission to serve others by following his example. Pastor Sandra Hackett will preside over this service as her first official worship service at LCPC. Nursery care provided for children ages infant-4yrs.

* "Spruce the Church for Easter" Work Party - Saturday April 3rd. 9:00 a.m. to ???. We'll be spring-cleaning the church grounds and working on some inside tasks as well. (All ages and skill levels welcome!). Contact Steve Babinec or Irv Kellenberger with questions. 

* Easter Sunday Celebration - Sunday April 4th, 10:00 a.m. Worship Service, Nursery care provided for infants through age 3, Sunday school (including Egg Hunt) for grades K-5 provided during worship.

Lent Wednesday Soup & Study for All Ages

Soup & Bread Supper and Bible Study

Wed. Feb. 24th  - Wed. March 24th ~ 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

All ages welcome (see program plans below). 

Come and join in a simple soup and bread supper with a community of friends and family focused on Jesus. There will be a small suggested donation amount but this is a make-donation-if- you-are-able meal.

Separate study tracks provided for all ages:

* Adults: Comparison study of various New Testament stories found in the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. Come for a new perspective or simply a refresher on the good news God gives us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Led by Jerry Berger,.

* Children in grades K-5 are invited to participate in  games, songs, hands-on activities exploring the purpose of the season of Lent. Led by Leena Prindle (DFF).

* Youth in grades 6-12 get to experience Jesus through an interactive Bible study. Games, worship, and hangout time in the youth room included. led by Rebecca Coffey (Youth Ministry Associate).

* Free nursery care provided for infants, toddlers,  and preschool age children. Provided by Margaux Blitch

January Kids Night - This Friday 1/22 - Video Games!

This month is Video Game Kids Night at LCPC!! My buddy Keith has an awesome gameroom setup in mind with fun times (& age appropriate games) for all your Elementary age (grades 1-5) kiddos!

We'll provide pizza and some other goodies. And if you're able to make a donation of $2-5 dollars to help offset food costs bring it along. If $ is tight right now, no worries, just have your child come for a fun time in a safe place with other children.

Dec. 18th - Kids Night Christmas Party!

Just a reminder that this Friday night - Dec. 18th - is Kids Night for December.

Kid's Night is for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

'Tis the season for Christmas parties and Kids Night is no exception!

Friday December 18th - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lake City Pres.

We'll have fun Christmas games, a Christmas-sy story time, and opportunity to decorate ornaments & cookies all to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

With two days to go.. please RSVP to let me know if your child is planning on being there. Friends are welcome to join in... please RSVP for them as well. I want to make sure to have enough cookies and ornaments on hand.

Sunday Dec. 13th: 10a.m. Family friend worship & 3 p.m.Healing Prayer Service

Child & Youth Led Worship - Sunday Dec. 13th - 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Come worship at a family friendly Christmas themed worship led by children and youth of Lake City Pres. Christmas Carols, Puppets, Christmas Skit performed by children for the sermon, and more. This is a great service to bring children, to give them a 'taste' of worship life and the expose them to the meaning of Christmas, while they are wiggly! There will not be Sunday school classes, but there will be Nursery Care available from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. for infants and toddlers up to age 3.

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.” (Isaiah 11:6 ESV)

Healing Prayer Service - Sunday Dec. 13th - 3:00 p.m.
Is this Christmas not-so-merry for you or someone you know? Come to our healing service, bring a friend or family member with you, or come to represent someone who needs healing prayer. In song and silence, in private prayer and in Holy Communion, this is a time to come closer to Jesus Christ and to others who may be mourning or discouraged or lonely or guilty.  Whether everything is going splendidly or whether nothing feels right, it is our hope that this extra hour to be quiet before God will strengthen and sustain you through the days ahead.

Operation Christmas Child - At Lake City Pres this Sunday 11/15

"OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD" Shoebox Packing - This Sunday November 15th

Just a last minute reminder that this Sunday November 15th you are invited to participate in packing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. We'll be meeting in the fellowship hall after worship at 11:00 a.m. Feel free to step in line and pack a box or two, it will take you less than five minutes! Prior to Sunday if you have extra cardboard shoeboxes or clear plastic shoeboxes (see-through rubbermaid style) that you can donate please bring them along on Sunday morning.  You can check out the gift suggestion list below to see what kinds of gifts you can bring to pack the boxes --- bring one or many items -- dollar stores are a great place to get several items on a budget. 

If you'd rather pack your own box for a boy or girl in a specific age group feel free to follow this link to guidelines on packing a shoe box and then bring the box to the church - we'll have the tag ready for you and deliver the box as well.

Veteran's Day Rememberance Room Activities for 11/11

In this room will be interactive stations where children, youth, and parents & other adults are invited to:

* Light a candle or a few in honor of friends and family who are veterans

* Write a prayer on a banner to pray for those who are veterans

* Mold playdough, build with legos, or color/paint a picture focused on giving thanks for those who fight for American freedom.

* Write a letter or make a card to be given to a veteran through Operation Gratitude.

* Bring & donate your leftover Halloween candy (an extra bag) to donate to Operation Gratitude Halloween Candy Collection (they take the candy to children in various places around the world to make friends.(Here is a video about the candy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxIHgabfxKA).

So stop in anytime between 11am and 2pm take 15 minutes or a few hours to remember and honor our Veterans, 

it is up to you. Invite friends & family to join you!

Halloween Alternatives (Trick or Treat & beyond)

Halloween can be a special family time for the Christian family. Here are some suggestions for making this time more meaningful. Perhaps these suggestions will be helpful in building your own family traditions. Just try one or two this year.

1.    Alternative Trick or Treat Ideas:

a.   Collect Money for Children supported by Unicef – project started by a Presbyterian pastor. Follow this link for more information.

b.   Bring an extra bag or box along to collect food for your local food bank. Using feedingamerica.org to locate your local food bank and their needs list, print out and ask neighbors if they can donate something on the list. (Make sure items are unopened and not expired or soon to expire).

2.    Carve a pumpkin for others.
Then take it to a family who have no children, or to someone in a convalescent hospital or a widow.

3.    Take a box of food for a needy family.
Include an uncarved pumpkin or take it to a family in your church, community, or neighborhood

4.    Give out Halloween tracts/Bible verses/prayers at the door.
Of course, give nice treats too. Tape a piece of gum to the tract/scripture/prayer and write “something to chew on” or tape a sucker with “a lick and a promise.”

5.    Save some of the Halloween candy.
Put it in a plastic bag in the freezer. Use this to stuff your stockings at Christmas.

6.    Make pumpkin bread as a family.
Then give it as a “love gift” to a friend. Save the pumpkin seeds and roast them in the oven for eating. (Follow this link for a recipe.)

7.    Invite another couple over to share the evening.
You might consider a couple without children. Have a simple dinner and let them enjoy handing out treats and/or helping with your children.

8.    Use the holiday to teach some of the negative aspects about Halloween.
With older children, use the story of the witch of Endor (I Sam. 28:7-25) to show the Biblical view regarding witches.

9.    Look up information regarding Jewish feasts and fall celebrations.
For example, the Feast of Tabernacles (see Exodus 23:16). Another festival is Purim (see Esther 9:20-32). Get some new family traditions.

10.   Have family discussions about honesty.
You might begin this with an object lesson on the masks of Halloween. Read Romans 12:1-2. Emphasize not being conformed to this world (by putting on masks), but be transformed by renewing of your mind (by putting God’s thoughts in your mind). Thus, being real honest about who we really are as Christians.

This month's Kids Night is a field trip for children in the first through fifth grades!  We're heading down the street to hang out at Meadowbrook Community Center for their Popcorn & a Movie night. The featured film is "Monsters vs. Aliens". 

The movie starts at 6pm. So we need children to meet at Lake City Pres at 5:30 p.m. to carpool over. Seem that it is approx. 94 mins in length, so I'm figuring we'll be back to the church and ready to go home by 8:30 p.m.  Friends are welcome so long they are also in grades 1-5.

PLEASE RSVP for your children & any friends by Thursday 10/15 so we can arrange for appropriate transportation for your child and any friends. Also, if you (parents) are interested in joining us and helping out with carpooling please let me know.

Also please, for your child or any friends attending, fill out a Medical Authorization Form if one has not already been filled out. Click the link, copy and paste into a Word Document, print, fill out, and bring to the move night so that we can have it on record in case of emergency.

Blessing for the New School Year

"Blessing for the New School Year"
Excerpted from "For Everything A Season: 75 Blessings for Daily Life" by the Nilsen Family 

Prayer: Gracious God, you have promised to keep us safe and holy. Be present with (Name) during this time of preparation for school tomorrow. Give (name) an open and eager mind. Protect all your children from temptation, and guide them with your love. Amen.

Bible Text: (Name), the Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore. - Psalm 121:8

Reflection: Invite those gathered (both parents and children) to share their thoughts and feelings about the new school year by finishing these sentences:
* I'm scared about...
* I'm worried about ...
* I'm excited about ...

Ritual Action: Parents and/or others not beginning school, make the sign of the cross on the forehead of the child going to school while saying these words: (Name), Jesus is with you wherever you go. Then have the child going to school place a Christian symbol (cross or other symbol) in the backpack or book bag as an ongoing reminder that Jesus is always present.

Amen.

Aug 30th = Fifth Sunday Worship, Backpack Blessing, & End of Summer Picnic

This Sunday, August 30th, is the fifth Sunday of the month —which means we’ll be holding our worship service informally in the Fellowship Hall from10am to 11am.

Back-to-School Blessing during worship

We will be holding a blessing of children, youth, and teachers heading back-to-school (or starting for the first time) during the Time for Young Disciples. Children are invited to bring their backpacks/notebooks to worship for this special blessing. Nursery care and Sunday School for pre-school, elementary children and middle school age youth will be held during worship.

End of Summer Potluck Picnic following worship! (11:00-1:00p)

* Bring your favorite potluck dish to share for our potluck party following worship (fridge space, oven, & crock pot outlets available)

* Picnic games for all

* Inflatable Bounce House for Children

* and fun fellowship times for all.

Come enjoy the last days of summer at LCPC as we prepare for the Fall and school year.

Register for Son Rock Kids Camp - Vacation Bible School Aug 10-14, 2009

We’re excited to invite you to participate in Vacation Bible School at Lake City Presbyterian Church to be held August 10th –14th, 2009. This year’s program is SonRock Kids Camp, a week of fun and adventure!

As children participate in fun-filled activities, children will learn how each one of them is loved by Jesus! We will have a great time with lively songs, hilarious skits, creative crafts, exciting games, Bible stories and tasty snacks—all of the things that make Vacation Bible School so much fun for children.

SonRock Kids Camp can be an inspirational and educational adventure for your entire family. Classes for children ages 3yrs to entering 5th grade will be offered from 9:30am to 12:30pm each day. Registration cost is $15 per child. Cost for families registering more than three children is $45 per family. Your family is invited to join in for our closing picnic on Friday 8/14. and for our worship presentation at 10 a.m. on Sunday 8/16.

Additionally, we’ll offer an Afternoon Adventure Program for children entering grades 1 through 5, Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for an additional $5 per child. Each afternoon trek will include activities like hiking, swimming, geo caching, etc. The fee helps us to offset cost of snacks, travel, and other materials.

New! Summer Faith Formation Associate. Welcome Kendall Jeske to LCPC

Hello LCPC friends,

A few of you have heard the news, some of you knew we were in this process and for others it may be first time news - we are bringing on someone to help out for children & youth ministry this summer at Lake City Presbyterian Church.

This "new guy's" name is Kendall Jeske and his title is "Summer Faith Formation Associate". His role will be working with the middle/high school youth and co-directing Vacation Bible School, in addition he'll be helping out with & learning what it means to work in children, youth, & family ministry in a congregation.This summer position is paid and approx. 15-20 hrs/wk and he is joining us for July 1st through August 31st. I am really excited to have him come on board and think you'll like him a lot

So he starts in the office on Wednesday this week (tomorrow!) and I'm hoping we'll have a chance for people to start meeting him on the 5th - more info on that later. Hello! My name is Kendall Jeske and I am graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and soon to be a seminary student, beginning this fall. I am very excited to have the chance to work with LCPC while being the Faith Formation Associate this summer. I'm especially excited to meet the youth and their families and to see what kinds of things I can learn in doing so. The past few summers I've spent at a Bible Camp in Idaho and a youth outreach center in Edmonds, WA. While I am a part of the LCP community this summer, please feel free to ask me questions, tell me jokes, and share your faith stories with me. One thing I ask of you, however, is to pray for me, for Leena, and for the youth and families of LCP and the surrounding community.
