Palm Sunday @ LCPC - Worship, One Great Hour of Sharing, & Seder (Passover) Lunch!

  Palm/Passion Sunday, March 24th, 10:00 a.m.

We begin Holy Week worship together with procession of palms, singing from our Kids Choir and adult choir.Together we'll explore the scripture detailing the moments of passion from God's people crying "Hosanna" to Jesus declaring "It is finished" at his death on the cross. Nursery care (for ages 0-3) and classes for children, age 3 through sixth grade, will be provided during the service. Following worship - all are invited to process together to the Fellowship Hall for a Seder meal lunch (symbolic of Jesus' last supper with his disciples).

Seder/Passover Lunch

Everyone is invited to stay for a free Seder lunch after worship this Sunday hosted by LCPC Board of Deacons and facilitated by Amy Spanne. This is a meal traditionally celebrated in Jewish culture during Passover and is likely the meal Jesus and his disciples shared during the "Last Supper". We'll be learning about the Passover Seder meal, it's roots in Biblical history, and how it is relevant to Christians today. This is a family-friendly event.

One Great Hour of Sharing Special Offering 

This Sunday our congregation will participate in the One Great Hour of Sharing with many churches around the nation.Your generous gifts to this Special Offering help provide relief those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and assist in helping to empower the poor and oppressed.

 Easter Celebration - Sunday, March 31st at 10 a.m.

 

Our celebration of the miraculous and life-saving resurrection of Jesus will be held  Sunday, March 31st at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. Nursery care and children's classes will be available during worship - and include egg hunts. A free light brunch featuring breakfast rolls will follow the worship service. Invite your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to join you!

Lunch with LCPC Missionaries - Sunday Feb 24th. 11:15-12:15

This Sunday, February 24th, LCPC Missions Department invites you to experience mission opportunities of a few members who have traveled in the past year. This Lunch & Presentation will be in the Fellowship Hall immediately following our 10 a.m. worship service - approx. 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Mary & Stan Jeppesen and Ann Powell will share stories, travels, pictures and some of what God is doing in these far-away places.

• The Jeppesens will be sharing their opportunity to work with Guatemala Village Health in Guatemala - Central America.
• Ann Powell will be talking about her trip to Africa also involving health care ministry.
• Lunch will be served and presentations will occur during the lunch.
• All are welcome - including children! (There will be care available for children not interested in the presentation).

Soup, Sandwich, & Sabbath - Study for Lent on Sundays -11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m

For four Sundays during Lent, the LCPC Christian Education Committee invites you to stay after worship for a light lunch and study of the new book “Sabbath in the Suburbs” by MaryAnn McKibben Dana. She is a Presbyterian pastor in Virginia who writes about the challenges and benefits of making space for intentional spiritual rest and renewal. Pastor Sandy liked the book so much that she’d like to read it with a group of you. CE is hoping that a Sunday lunch time will allow more of you to participate than our previous Wednesday Lent evening soup suppers & study.

Sunday, February 17^th the Sabbath in the Suburbs & lunch/class will begin, 11:30am -12:30pm.  

Sunday, February 24^th there will still be lunch, Sabbath book study is on hold while LCPC Mission Committee has an event planned for all to experience: Presenters will be LCPC members and missionaries - Stan & Mary Jeppesen sharing about their medical mission to Guatemala and Ann Powell will share about her mission trip to Kenya.

Sundays, March 3rd, 10th, and 17th: Sabbath in the Suburbs Books study resumes for the next three Sundays. Again, lunch will also be served.

Sunday March 24th, which is Palm Sunday - pencil in the date and watch for more information as a Seder meal will be served as preparation for Holy Week.

Finally:  EASTER! is Sunday, March 31st this year.  You’ll be on your own for lunch, but it will be a glorious day to celebrate in worship together!

De-mystifying "Joining the Church"

Pastor Sandy Hackett will be be hosting a "Membership Morning" for people who are considering becoming members of Lake City Presbyterian Church. It is also a morning for those who wonder why you would EVER want to take that step because you're happy just attending - and are welcome to continue to do so! However, there are some benefits in actually joining, so come talk about it. We will provide childcare for your kids, along with coffee,tea, and snacks for you. Seahawks Playoffs this Sunday!

A note from Pastor Sandy: Every 5 years or so, there is a miracle and the Seattle Seahawks make it into the playoffs. Even more rarely does a playoff game coincide with worship, but this Sunday it does. Acknowledging how many fans there are in our congregation, we are planning worship to be 45 minutes or less this week, and are working hard to figure out how to play the game live in fellowship hall so you can tune in ASAP. The Hawks generally pick up speed after the first quarter anyway. Hope to see you all on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Infant and Toddler Drop In & Play Time on Mondays

Do you have an infant or toddler and want to get out of the house to meet some other parents/grandparents and have a comfortable and safe place your children can play - for free? 


The nursery at Lake City Presbyterian Church is open for Infant and Toddler Drop In and Play time every Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Come and visit for a little bit or stay and play for the entire time.

Age appropriate toys and activities for ages 0-4. A great place to meet up with a friend, playgroup or to connect and make new friends. Adults must stay to supervise their children.

Come join in an experiential study on prayer with Christine Sine for Wednesday evenings at Lake City Presbyterian Church. A soup supper provided from 6-6:30 p.m. We are suggesting a donation of $5 per person to help cover cost of meal and program. The first Wednesday will have a prayer labyrinth experience and Wednesdays in March will feature prayer studies led by Christine Sine of Mustard Seed Associates.

• Wednesday February 29th - Prayer Walks: Labyrinths 

This Wednesday we will provide you with history and instructions for using a prayer labyrinth using a model that has been taped down in our youth ministry room. There will be opportunity to walk on it and create a 'finger labyrinth' that you can take home. Led by Leena Prindle - LCPC Director of Faith Formation

Christmas Eve Worship Services at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Enter into and relive the Christmas story, and celebrate the birth of Jesus during Christmas Eve worship on Saturday, December 24th, at services at 5:30p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Both services will be short and engaging for all ages through drama, poetry, video, and music to share in the celebration of a baby to be born in a manger. Worshipers will be sent out singing Joy to the World by candle light.

Come to a casual worship on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th. Join in telling of the story of Christmas through  scripture lessons and carols. You’re invited to wear your Christmas pajamas - if you’d like - and children can bring their baby dolls to cuddle.

All year we have been collecting small items to fill Shoe Boxes to be sent to children around the world through Samaritan's Purse. November is the month for filling and delivering these boxes. Between now and November 20 you are invited to:

· Bring items for the boxes. These items can be anything that has been on the list during the year or just something that you think a child would enjoy

· Donate towards $7/box/shipping & handling costs

Remember that this could be the only Christmas gift a child might receive so lets make it a great gift given in Christian love and help make a child’s eyes shine.

Can’t make it to the party? Pack your own box(es) bring it to the LCPC church office Nov. 15-18, or by 12 noon on the 20th, and we will deliver them for you!

Drop In Playtime for Babies, Tots & Preschoolers

Drop In and Play Time at Lake City Presbyterian Church has changed from Wednesdays to MONDAYS.

Beginning Monday, October 3rd. 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the Nursery and Preschool Room for babies & tots ages 0-4 yrs.

Children need to bring an adult with them for the playtime. 

Help pass the word on to those you know who are parents, grandparents & caregivers of babies, tots, and preschoolers.

"Making Moral Choices" 


Several weeks ago, I preached a sermon on ―Making Moral Choices. I promised a number of you that I would reprint parts of it in the newsletter since the book I was working from is out of print.  The book is called  "Choices:  Making Right Decisions in a Complex World,” by Lewis B. Smedes.  


Smedes says that most moral decisions are made on a continuum rather than being simply right/wrong, good/bad.  He offers language that makes it possible to talk about this continuum in a way that does not compromise Biblical standards and yet acknowledges that we are broken people in a broken world.   I first heard this material in a lecture he offered in my ethics class at Fuller, and I have never forgotten it.


When we have a decision to make, Smedes says that our first and best hope is for choice that is celebrational.  I love his question.  He asks, ―Is there singing in heaven because of this decision?  Are the rights of all parties honored in such a way that everyone has won?   Is it excellent?” 


This is always our best hope and highest goal, but we can’t always reach it.  So he suggests the following criteria, in descending order:


Is it justifiable?  Is this act warranted, legally permissible, circumstantially necessary?   This is the minimum standard we have to meet for something to be considered morally ―right.



Is this obligatory—something I must do.  ―We are, for instance, obligated to keep our hands off other people’s throats and out of their pockets.


Is this tolerable?  ―We do not tolerate people walking naked down Main Street at high noon.  This does not mean that noonday nudity is morally wrong; it only means that most of us do not want to see it on our streets.


In the hardest places of life the question becomes at the very least, Is this permissible?  In ethics class, we debated case studies around questions like ―Is it permissible to steal life-sustaining medication if you are too poor to purchase it? The answer isn’t a blinding yes/no, good/bad, right/wrong.  Compelling rights and responsibilities are in competition here.


Smedes suggests that sometimes we simply seek to pass the test, is it excusable? “We excuse people when we decide that while they have done something wrong, they are not really to blame for what they did.  Smedes uses the example of a friend who committed suicide, deeply  wounding his wife and children, his patients and all who depended on him.  However, he was in the midst of such a great depression, that his desire to escape made his decision understandable.  Not right, but excusable.


And finally, Smedes says, as desperately broken people operating in a shatteringly broken world, the final question we ask of any moral decision is, is it forgiveable?  Can I forgive?  Can I be forgiven?  And more importantly, can God forgive?  And the answer is ultimately, yes.  There is nothing we can do that God cannot forgive if we are willing to accept his forgiveness.  We are back at the cross of Christ.  Because of his body broken and his blood shed, we are forgiven.  


That isn’t where we want to start in making moral decisions.  We do not sin that grace may abound, b/c forgiveness doesn't exempt us from the consequences of our choices.  Nor does it protect others from the extraordinary pain that we can inflict when we sin.  But it is possible to receive the forgiveness of God for even the most selfish and destructive of decisions.


Is it celebrational?  Justifiable?  Obligatory?  Tolerable, permissible, excusable?  Is it forgivable?  These are the questions we ask when making moral choices.  It is my prayer that we would find a celebrational solution to the crises each of us face in our personal lives, and that in the infinite grace, mercy, and strength of God that we might  find such a celebrational solution to the crises of our world.
